Skittles Touch

OK so I currently use Google Chrome and it appears that at least in this browser my last post shows up rather strangely. Maybe it's just a Chrome issue or perhaps it's happening in all browsers. Either way I'll see if I can correct it this time! It probably doesn't matter anyway, chances are no-one actually saw the post or this blog, hopefully that'll change in time.

So today I wanted to share a great little ad that I found recently. It's not new, it was made in 2007 as far as I know by TBWA/Chiat/Day in Los Angeles. It's a funny ad for skittles. Now I usually don't really like skittles (they make my tongue itchy - anyone agree?) but this ad always seems to give me skittles cravings. I think that's more down to the colours than the ad itself though.

It's only a tiny detail but I love how every time this guy touches something and turns it to skittles for a fraction of a second you can see that the skittles are perfectly formed in the shape of what he has touched. Like I said, only a tiny detail, but it would have been so easy to replace the stapler or phone with a pile of skittles that falls and not bother shaping them so carefully. I don't think it would have made a difference to the ad, but I love that they bothered to actually do it.

Skittles actually seem to enjoy making slightly crazy and unexpected ads. If you give them a quick Google or search in Youtube you'll find quite a few strange ones, particularly the Russian ones, I've no idea why.

Anyway, enjoy the ad (hope it displays properly this time). If I ever meet this guy I think I'll shake his hand and see what happens.

Welcome. Greetings. Fáilte. Wilkommen.

Hello and greetings one and all. How did you get here? I hope you didn't hurt yourself along the way and that the dogs didn't bother you on the way in. It's good to see you anyway, you look a thousand times better than the last time I saw you.

Anyway this is just a wee blog from a wannabe copywriter. What you'll get here is basically some random thoughts from an advertising student as I discover what this weird industry is all about and how it works. Hopefully you can follow me as I develop from a green and naive little student into copywriter extraodinaire who goes on to take the Irish advertising scene (we'll leave the international scene for the moment) by storm, revolutionising the very fabric of language itself. Or not.

For reasons unknown even to myself I'm gonna kick this whole thing off with a spectacularly impressive video which one of my fellow students showed in class today. It's not an ad but a music video brimming with visual delight. If you're familiar with the US band OK Go then you'll know that they pride themselves on their quirky and unusual videos (the fact that the music ain't half bad seems to be a mere bonus). I've seen a lot of their stuff but until today I hadn't seen this beauty. Enjoy and please do come back for more. I promise there'll be ads next time!
